New Delhi: Former Union Cabinet Minister Jaswant Singh passed away today morning after a prolonged illness. He was 82.
He took his last breath at the Army Hospital Research and Referral in New Delhi, where he was admitted on June 25 and being treated for Sepsis with Multi-organ Dysfunction Syndrome. He had cardiac arrest this morning. His COVID status was negative.
The Hospital said in a statement, “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Hon’ble Major Jaswant Singh (Retd), former Cabinet Minister of Government of India at 0655 hours on 27 September 2020. Despite the best efforts of the attending team of specialists to resuscitate him, he could not be revived and passed away today.”
Mr Singh had served as India’s foreign minister, defence minister and finance minister. He was an officer in the Army in the 1950s and 60s but he resigned to pursue politics.
President Ramnath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several other leaders have expressed their condolences on his demise. The President tweeted, “The demise of veteran soldier, outstanding parliamentarian, exceptional leader and intellectual Shri Jaswant Singh is distressing. He combined many difficult roles with ease and equanimity. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
In his condolences the Vice President said, “Deeply saddened by the demise of former Union Minister, Shri Jaswant Singh. He was a great leader who served the nation with distinction in various capacities. He was a man of impeccable integrity, an able administrator & an excellent parliamentarian.”
Conveying his condolences to Jaswant Singh’s son Manvendra Singh, the Prime Minister said, ”Jaswant Singh Ji served our nation diligently, first as a soldier and later during his long association with politics. During Atal Ji’s Government, he handled crucial portfolios and left a strong mark in the worlds of finance, defence and external affairs. Saddened by his demise.”
“Jaswant Singh Ji will be remembered for his unique perspective on matters of politics and society. He also contributed to the strengthening of the BJP. I will always remember our interactions. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” he added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, ”Deeply pained by the passing away of veteran BJP leader & former Minister, Shri Jaswant Singh ji. He served the nation in several capacities including the charge of Raksha Mantri. He distinguished himself as an effective Minister and Parliamentarian.
Jaswant Singh ji would be remembered for his intellectual capabilities and a stellar record in service to the nation. He also played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Rajasthan. Condolences to his family and supporters in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”
